Tarapith, in Birbhum district of West Bengal, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas. It is here that the eye (tara) of Sati is believed to have fallen, and where the great sadhak Bamakhepa attained realisation of the Mother. The temple's cremation ground and the sacred Dwarka river make it a living centre of tantric devotion.
Kamakhya, atop the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, is the most important of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the yoni of Sati is worshipped. It is the seat of Dasa Mahavidya and the heart of Shakta tantra in India.
